This is the story of Andrea B, her struggle 2 thrive in obscurity,
her pain & joy in the world of song, her hopes beyond 4 a future strong.
It began looooohng ago, @ the tender age of .......21. Well, tender given the chronological world, however, in the world of the western music industry 21 is more like well done, possibly charcoaled. Anyway, @ an age when most who claim success in the singer/songwriter field have already "made it", Andrea decided 2 embark upon her own path 2 "stardom". Already a pianist, she commenced singing lessons with voice coach Sue McNeil & began writing songs 2 the rythm of her pedalling as she cycled 2/from uni/work along St Kilda Road.
@ the age of 23 she left all other commitments 2 pursue her singer/songwriter career, honing her voice & performing skills with the aforementioned taskmaster Sue 4 the rest of the 1990s via training & a series of 4 student concerts per year, varying in venue from intimate parlour room 2 larger productions @ the Victorian Army Barracks (on the aforementioned St Kilda Road). 2 gain more confidence singing whilst accompanying herself on piano she volunteered her performing services 2 several nursing homes in Melbourne's east (from Frankston 2 Hawthorn), & scored a gig singing the National Anthem 4 basketball crowds @ Melbourne Park. By 1997 she was enjoying regular paid work as a singer, 1st as the female 1/2 of the covers duo "Face Value", 2nd as the 'Miss' in the Italian wedding band "5 Hits & a Miss". She continued 2 get her original material "out there" with a year-long residency @ Cafe Bohemio in Smith St Collingwood (sadly now deceased) supporting the quirky, charismatic French performer Ced Le Meledo, & also performed @ other venues suited 2 her craft, including the Barley Corn Hotel in Collingwood, the Arthouse Hotel on the outskirts of the CBD and Revolver in Prahran alongside her friends, the comedy/musical duo Cosmic Egg.
@ the age of 30 Andrea left Sue's fold. She staged the 1-woman musical Amazonian Lady as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2000 @ the Cherry Tree Hotel in Richmond, & won 1st prize in the "Wacky Trax" category of the National Australian Songwriters Association Competition with her composition When I Lived Alone. She then decided 2 put performance aside 2 concentrate on recording with her long-time producer buddy Mark McSherry @ MMCS in Richmond.
Andrea has not managed 2 make a career out of her dream (yet) & has financially supplemented her musical aspirations with a series of "real jobs" throughout. @ the age of 34 she got sensible about her future & chose the 9-5 option.
@ the age of 36 (after enjoying a substantial music hiatus 2 cultivate other rewarding aspects of her life), Andrea took advantage of a 6 month break between dayjobs 2 embark upon recording an album with Mark. The result of this 2 year project is "Loose Ends", an eclectic collection of 10 songs written during the decade straddling the 90s & 00s.
@ the age of 38 preparations were underway 4 a formal CD launch when Andrea fell pregnant & postponed this endeavour indefinitely. Meanwhile, she was bouyed by a nomination 4 the Australian Songwriters Association Rudy Brandsma award 4 songwriting excellence & 2 songs being placed in the top 10 of the National 2008 Songwriting Competition - Loose Ends = 7th place Country category, Fire In My Mind = 9th place Contemporary category.
Come wot may, Andrea will nurture the development of her music 4 the rest of her life...
